RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate follicular growth and ovulatory rates in mares treated with an intravaginal progesterone device (P4) during the 10-day period, associated with the use of estradiol benzoate (EB). The results were compared during the transition period (ET) in the spring and the breeding season in the summer (ER). The variables were submitted to ANOVA (Tukey's test), considering P<0.05. No ovulation occurred during the permanence of the P4 implant in both experimental periods. The ovulatory rate in the ER was 100% (n = 8) and in the ET 62.5% (n = 5; P = 0.0547). Significant differences were observed (<0.001), in both periods, comparing follicular growth rates during the permanence of P4 device (ER: 1.33 ± 0.89mm/d; ET: 1.00 ± 0.81mm/d) to the period without P4 (ER: 3.63 ± 1.33 mm/d; ET: 3.31 ± 1.66 mm/d). The present study demonstrated applicability and efficiency of a hormonal protocol using P4 intravaginal device and EB for follicular control in mares, both during ET and ER.

The energy content of finishing diets offered to feedlot cattle may vary across countries. We assumed that the lower is the energy content of the finishing diet, the shorter can be the adaptation period to high-concentrate diets without negatively impacting rumen health while still improving feedlot performance. This study was designed to determine the effects of adaptation periods of 6, 9, 14 and 21 days on feedlot performance, feeding behaviour, blood gas profile, carcass characteristics and rumen morphometrics of Nellore cattle. The experiment was designed as a completely randomised block, replicated 6 times, in which 96 20-month-old yearling Nellore bulls (391.1 ± 30.9 kg) were fed in 24 pens (4 animals/pen) according to the adaptation period adopted: 6, 9, 14 or 21 days. The adaptation diets contained 70%, 75% and 80.5% concentrate, and the finishing diet contained 86% concentrate. After adaptation, one animal per pen was slaughtered (n = 24) for rumen morphometric evaluations and the remaining 72 animals were harvested after 88 days on feed. Orthogonal contrasts were used to assess linear, quadratic and cubic relationships between days of adaptation and the dependent variable. Overall, as days of adaptation increased, final BW (P = 0.06), average daily gain (ADG) (P = 0.07), hot carcass weight (P = 0.04) and gain to feed ratio (G : F) (P = 0.07) were affected quadratically, in which yearling bulls adapted by 14 days presented greater final BW, ADG, hot carcass weight and improved G : F. No significant (P > 0.10) days of adaptation effect was observed for any of feeding behaviour variables. As days of adaptation increased, the absorptive surface area of the rumen was affected cubically, where yearling bulls adapted by 14 days presented greater absorptive surface area (P = 0.03). Thus, Nellore yearling bulls should be adapted by 14 days because it led to improved feedlot performance and greater development of rumen epithelium without increasing rumenitis scores.

RESUMO

Familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (FIBGC), also known as "Fahr's disease," is a neuropsychiatric disorder with motor and cognitive symptoms. It is characterized pathologically by bilateral calcification most commonly in the basal ganglia and also in other brain regions such as the thalamus and cerebellum. A recent report by Wang et al. (2012) discovered multiple families with FIBGC carrying mutations in the SLC20A2 gene, encoding the inorganic phosphate transporter PiT-2, which segregated in an autosomal dominant pattern. To understand further the role of SLC20A2 in FIBGC brain pathology, here we described the gene expression pattern across the whole brain for SLC20A2, using the Allen Institute Human Brain Atlas database. Microarray analysis provided evidence that the neuroanatomical pattern of expression for SLC20A2 is highest in the regions most commonly affected in FIBGC. Neuroanatomical regions that demonstrated high correlation or anti-correlation with SLC20A2 expression also showed a molecular network with potential to explain the limited neuroanatomical distribution of calcifications in IBGC. Lastly, these co-expression networks suggest additional further candidate genes for FIBGC.

RESUMO

AIM: To compare morphometric data of the eyelid fissure and the levator muscle function (LF) before and up to 6 months after transcutaneous injection with five units of Botox in patients with upper lid retraction (ULR) from congestive or fibrotic thyroid eye disease (TED). METHODS: Twenty-four patients with ULR from TED were submitted to transcutaneous injection of 5 units (0.1 ml) of Botox in one eye only. Patients were divided into two groups: 12 with congestive-stage TED (CG), and 12 with fibrotic-stage TED (FG). Bilateral lid fissure measurements using digital imaging and computer-aided analysis were taken at baseline and at regular intervals 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months and 6 months after unilateral Botox injection. Mean values taken at different follow-up points were compared for the two groups. RESULTS: Most patients experienced marked improvement in ULR, with a mean reduction of 3.81 mm in FG and 3.05 mm in CG. The upper eyelid margin reflex distance, fissure height and total area of exposed interpalpebral fissure were significantly smaller during 1 month in CG and during 3 months in FG. Reduction in LF and in the difference between lateral and medial lid fissure measurements was observed in both groups. The treatment lasted significantly longer in FG than in CG. CONCLUSIONS: A single 5-unit Botox injection improved ULR, reduced LF and produced an adequate lid contour in patients with congestive or fibrotic TED. The effect lasts longer in patients with fibrotic orbitopathy than in patients with congestive orbitopathy.

RESUMO

This article reports the anti-inflammatory effect of Blutaparon portulacoides (B. portulacoides), specifically the ethanolic extract of its aerial parts, on the edema formation and leukocyte influx caused by Bothrops jararacussu (B. jararacussu) snake venom and Bothropstoxin-I and II (BthTX-I and II) isolated from this venom as an alternative treatment for Bothrops snakebites. The anti-inflammatory effect of B. portulacoides ethanolic extract was compared with an animal group pretreated with dexamethasone. B. portulacoides ethanolic extract significantly inhibited paw edema induced by B. jararacussu venom and by BthTX-I and II. Also, results demonstrated that the extract caused a reduction of the leukocyte influx induced by BthTX-I. However, the extract was not capable of inhibiting the leukocyte influx induced by the venom and by BthTX-II. In conclusion, these results suggest that the ethanolic extract of this plant possess components able to inhibit or inactivate toxins present in B. jararacussu venom, including its myotoxins, responsible for the edema formation. However, the leukocyte migration caused by the venom and BthTX-II was not inhibited by the plant, probably due to the different mechanisms involved in the edema formation and leukocyte influx. This is the first report of B. portulacoides extract as anti-inflammatory against snake venoms and isolated toxins.(AU)

RESUMO

Hypertrophic pachymeningitis is a rare disorder characterized by meningeal thickness, that can be caused by infection, tumoral infiltration, inflammatory disorders or idiopathic. We report the case of a 40 year-old man that presented with longstanding headache and progressive bilateral visual loss and proptosis. Cranial and orbital magnetic resonance imaging revealed diffuse dural thickness and bilateral extraconal orbital lesion. Extensive investigation did not reveal any systemic condition. Histopathological study after meningeal and orbital biopsy disclosed a chronic inflammatory process compatible respectively with idiopathic hypertrophic pachymeningitis (IHP) and orbital pseudotumor. This case emphasizes that orbital involvement can occur in IHP and that its early identification is of great importance in order to improve the visual prognosis of this condition.

The purpose of this study is to identify the patients's perception during their stay in the ICU. The sample was composed by ten patients, who had gone to cardiac surgery. They received psychological assistance only after their discharge from the ICU. The data was obtained throw a qualitative approach, using a content analysis. The results suggest that the patients have a stereotyped view about the ICU, linked with the idea of suffering and death; the nurses play an important role during fragility movements, physical and emotional dependence; the pain, by its subjective nature, individually and emotionally, is inevitable, because it is related to procedure and usually it is associated to physical suffering.

RESUMO

The membrane bound cytochrome c nitrite reductase from the sulfate reducer Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (ATCC 27774) was found to have a high specific activity in the reduction of sulfite, producing stoichiometric amounts of sulfide. The K(m) for sulfite in the MV+.:sulfite oxidoreductase assay is 0.75 mM, and the specific activity 2.06 mumolH2/min/mg. Visible and EPR spectroscopies studies indicate that the enzyme high-spin heme reacts with sulfite in the oxidised state, and that sulfide partially reduces the enzyme. The redoxcycled enzyme, using H2/Hydrogenase/MV+. as a reductant, is identical to the resting enzyme. This is the first time that a c-type nitrite reductase has been shown to reduce sulfite. These findings, besides revealing a new function for the nitrite reductase, raise a major question regarding the sulfur metabolism in the sulfate reducing bacteria as well as the cellular localization of the enzymatic activities involved in the dissimilatory reduction of sulfate. The purified nitrite reductase is a heterooligomer, containing two types of subunits of 62 kDa (+/- 5 kDa) and 18.8 kDa (+/- 1 kDa), and forms a complex or aggregate with a molecular mass of approximately 750 kDa.

RESUMO

To determine whether there are specific cytologic features associated with primary Sjögren's syndrome (SS), the authors evaluated impression cytology specimens from three conjunctival sites (temporal bulbar [TB], inferior bulbar [IB], and inferior tarsal [IT]) from 38 SS eyes, 34 eyes of aqueous tear-deficient patients without SS, 35 eyes of seborrheic blepharitis patients, and 17 eyes of normal controls in a masked fashion. The following features were observed more frequently in SS eyes than in the eyes of the other groups: squamous metaplasia of the TB and IB (P less than 0.05), extensive (greater than 75%) goblet cell loss of the TB (P less than 0.05), mucous aggregates of the bulbar conjunctiva (P less than 0.05), and inflammatory cells intercalated with epithelial cells on the IT conjunctiva (P less than 0.06). The conjunctival inflammatory cell infiltrate correlated with the presence of extensive squamous metaplasia (P less than 0.01) in SS specimens. The inflammatory cells on the IT conjunctival epithelium were found to consist predominantly of T-lymphocytes by immunofluorescent staining of cytologic specimens from six eyes. Based on these findings, the authors speculated that conjunctival squamous metaplasia, in addition to aqueous tear deficiency, may be due to primary involvement of the dysfunctional immune system of SS.
